How A Evaporator Coil (Unit Cooler) Works

The evaporator is where the cold air comes from. the coils are made from various metals, typically copper, but steel and aluminum are also used. These coils conduct hot or cold refrigerant gas through “U” shaped tubes stacked inline into a panel.

There are several steps that take place to cool the air:

  1. The compressor works by pulling cold, low pressured refrigerant through the evaporator coils and passes it to the condenser in a hot, high-pressured state.
  2. The heated refrigerant travels through coils that start to cool the compressed refrigerant 
  3. The compressed refrigerant gas is than passed through the expansion valve before entering the evaporator coil. 
  4. The expansion valve plays a very important role, as it released the pressure of the refrigerant the liquid is cooled. Created the cooling effect needed.
